6 MI Eatwell Guide

Build a balanced day

Aim for variety across the food groups. The balance is about your overall diet, rather than making every meal identical.

Fruit and vegetables

  • Aim for at least five portions of a variety each day.
  • These make up just over a third of the food we eat. Fresh, frozen and tinned options can all help.

Starchy carbohydrates

  • Base meals on potatoes, bread, rice, pasta or other starchy foods.
  • Choose wholegrain or higher-fibre versions with less added fat, salt and sugar.

Include the other groups

  • Include protein foods and dairy or suitable alternatives.
  • Use small amounts of unsaturated oils and spreads.
