6 MI Sleep & Recovery

Protect your recovery

Sleep allows the body and mind to recover. Caffeine and extra effort do not replace it.

Make time for sleep

  • Adults usually need seven to nine hours; needs vary.
  • Protect a regular sleep opportunity around duties and training.

Before and after disrupted sleep

  • When possible, allow extra sleep opportunities before a brief period of disruption and protect recovery sleep afterwards.
  • This is a short-term measure, not a substitute for regular sleep during prolonged duties or deployment.

Recognise your pattern

  • Night work and irregular duties can disrupt the normal sleep–wake cycle.
  • Plan rest opportunities with your chain of command when duties reduce sleep.
